Meet…

Dr. James McWhorter
Conductor and Cellist

Exciting performer, a dedicated educator, Dr. McWhorter has recently gained acclaim for his work in establishing a string program in his community schools at a time when many other schools in the country are struggling to keep what they have.  He has conducted youth orchestras, taught in colleges and public schools, has had extensive experience performing Chamber Music, has performed with professional orchestras and in recording studios and brings a unique blend of encouragement and expertise to young string players and orchestra programs.

As part of their “giving back to the community”, Southwest Strings sponsors Dr. McWhorter’s visits to programs throughout the United States. He guest conducts for festivals and statewide orchestras, gives cello master-classes, works with string classes of all ages, talks to parent groups about their importance and power, performs chamber music and works with other educators to enhance their programs.

For 5 years he played with the USMC Band’s “White House Orchestra” and was professor of cello and orchestra director at both Marshall University (8 years) and Utah State University (4 years).  Recently he has been drawn to teaching the younger aged students.

He holds the DMA in cello performance (minor in orchestral conducting) from the University of Arizona where he studied with the late Gordon Epperson.  He has extensive experience conducting youth orchestras including many summers in residence at Rocky Ridge Music Center in Estes Park, Colorado.

Dr. McWhorter currently directs Mountain West String Academy/Cache County Elementary Strings in Logan, Utah.  He supervises the 12 to 15 teachers at 11 elementary schools (4th and 5th grades) and works with the volunteer board in maintaining a unique partnership between the board and the county school system.
